Day 11a

S Genesis 20:11

11Abraham replied, “I thought, ‘This is a godless place. They will want my wife and will kill me to get her.’

O

Again, Abraham passes Sarah off as his Sister and lets a stranger marry her. It did not end well the first time so I am not sure why they would have done it again. But here He says he was afraid of their lives. The interesting thing I think about this passage is that Abraham says ‘this is a godless place’. He changes his behavior to suit the area  he is in. He changed his morals to deal with ‘godless people’. I think that this is something that radically changes in the new testament. Jesus calls us to be witnesses by even our actions. We are to walk in righteousness even if  we find ourselves in a godless place- perhaps even more so.

A

Walk honorably regardless of who or where you are. There is no ‘when in Rome’ for Christians to lower their moral standards. It may be fine to change small non important aspects of our lives to make unbelievers more comfortable (refraining from eating, drinking etc) but we should never change our stance on right and wrong.

P

God, I know that it is so easy to cave principles when in the face of danger, or when i am scared, please help me stay strong in my conviction and remember that you are there. Amen.

Day 10 - Genesis 19:21-22

S

21He said to him, “Very well, I will grant this request too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of. 22But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it.” (That is why the town was called Zoar. )

O

I never noticed this before, the Angels of the Lord were not able to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah until Lot and family made it to Zoar.

Lot’s wife always made me wonder. I often thought that perhaps she looked back after hearing a loud noise. I have read commentaries that said you only look back for two reasons, one because you long for something, or two- because you maliciously want to watch something burn. But this bit of scripture really changes the scene. She did not look back on the run, because she was already in the safety of Zoar. Rules out the sudden noise.

A-

Leave evil. just leave it. Don’t look back to watch it burn, don’t look back thinking of the good times. Just go.

P

Dear God, I know that I have a bad habit of romanticizing the past, even the bad past. Help me to let it go. Help me keep my eyes on you alone. Amen

Day 9

S

Genesis 14:1

1At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goyim,

O

There are so many verses like this in the Bible. There are so many people and bits of History I do not think I could ever unravel if I had eternity to do so. BUT- God remembers, God never forgets.

A-

God forgets no one. He igonores no one. We are all precious in His sight.

P-

God please help me remember that we are all important in your finely woven history. There are no throw away people. no one is unimportant. Help me remember to act that way each day, with every interaction.

Day 8 (Day 7 day off!)

S Genesis 12:17-19

But the Lord inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram’s wife Sarai. 18So Pharaoh summoned Abram. “What have you done to me?” he said. “Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife? 19Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!”

O

So, Abram told his wife to pretend that they were brother and sister, so that the Pharaoh would look kindly down on them, and not kill him. I never noticed this before, but Pharaoh took Sarai as his wife. Abram did this to avoid a famine in the land God had directed him to.

A

1. Don’t lie. Abrams lie defiled his wife and cheapened his character.

2. Just because you are scared stick to God’s plan. God led Abram to the promised land. When a famine arrived, he chose to take matters into his own hands. Perhaps he should have prayed first.

3. You cannot fight sin with sin, Just like Lot will offer up his daughters for rape to spare angels, you cannot fight sin with sin.

4. When offering up people- offer up yourself. It strikes me that these two men did not offer themselves  up, but instead put the burden on their loved ones.

P

Dear God, let me first sacrifice myself before I hurt or endanger others. Lord help keep my focus on the pure, lord help keep me dependent on you, that I would call out to you first in my time of need, before rashly making plans. Help me walk in your ways. Amen

Day 6

S- Genesis 11:6

The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

O-

God broke up Babel because people working together to could accomplish anything. Unfortunately, that anything, was trying to take over the universe and inject it full of sin.

A-

When God’s people come together in His holy name, there is nothing we could not accomplish. We should set our goals on the holy and the pure.

P-

Dear God, please help me realize how powerful you truly are. I pray that as Your church we can rise up and come together in your power and prevail against sins, that we could defend the orphans and widows, that we could raise up our brothers and sisters from poverty and abuse. Amen.
